Museums and the Senses: planning for all

Research Colloquium
Tuesday 28th of June 2022
Paul & Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum (CAMU) & Museum of Cycladic Art

How has museum accessibility for visitors with hearing and visual impairments improved over the last 20 years? Which are the key takeaways from the programmes which have been implemented by museums in Greece? How can a multisensory approach contribute towards the creation of an open and inclusive museum? To what extent is it possible for museum professionals to plan for all? These are some of the questions that have been addressed in the scientific forum that took place at the Paul & Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum (CAMU) and the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, on Tuesday, the 28th of June 2022.

The colloquium brought together archaeologists, museologists, educators with expertise in special education, architects-designers and cultural heritage experts. They presented applications and solutions that have been implemented in Greek museums and other cultural institutions and discussed how museums should plan in future taking into consideration the needs of people with sensory disorders. All presentations were in Greek with simultaneous interpretation in the sign language.

Organizing committee: Nikolas Papadimitriou (Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum) – Marina Plati (Museum of Cycladic Art) – Eleni Markou (Museum of Cycladic Art).

The first part of the colloquium was recorded by the BLOD platform of the Bodossaki Foundation, to which we are indebted. The second part was recorded by Mt. Euthymis Theodosis, whom we thank warmly.
