Katie Demakopoulou (1937-2023) was a leading Greek archaeologist and a renowned researcher of Mycenaean culture. As an excavator, she conducted significant investigations at Laconia, prehistoric Thebes and the Mycenaean citadel of Midea in the Argolid. As a researcher, she applied innovative methods of archaeometric analysis to the study of artifacts, bringing Aegean archaeology closer to sciences. As Director of the National Archaeological Museum, she organized major exhibitions of Mycenaean culture in Greece and abroad and played a crucial part in the restitution and repatriation of the so-called “Aidonia Treasure”.
To honour her memory, the Hellenic National Archaeological Museum, the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum, the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development and the Archaeological Society at Athens are organizing an international conference in Athens on October 9-11, 2025. The conference title refers to the exhibition “The Mycenaean World”, which was organized by Demakopoulou in 1988 and presented at Athens (National Archaeological Museum) and other European capitals.
The conference sessions focus on research topics explored by Katie Demakopoulou in the course of her career:
(a) Mycenaean citadels and palaces
(b) Relations between Crete and Mainland Greece
(c) Crafts, Artisans and Workshops in Mycenaean Greece
(d) The Mycenaean culture in museum presentations.
